Day of the Dead. Ofrenda & Parade

The Day of the Dead is one of the most vibrant and iconic celebrations in Mexico. Beyond honoring ancestors, it has evolved into a full-scale carnival, influenced in part by Halloween.

In the main square, the Zócalo, enormous ofrendas—altars dedicated to the departed—are displayed. These are massive papier-mâché sculptures, most depicting skeletons, though some portray animals: jaguars, pumas, coyotes, and the Xoloitzcuintli dogs—or simply “Xolos” as they’re called here—mythical guides of the souls.

Through the streets wander costumed figures, from traditional skeletons of every kind to characters from horror films and anime. The celebration culminates with the grand Day of the Dead parade, drawing participants from across the country.
